Classical Myth from 21st Century Storytellers

Our speakers for this series are five performers who research and explore traditional narratives and devise spoken word storytelling performances, bringing this material to life for modern audiences. They follow in the footsteps of the storytellers who were crucial for the oral transmission of myth and legend in the ancient world. All the shows in this series have toured in performance in theatrical spaces and are gathered here for the first time in a special online sharing of the work.

Wednesday 25 November: Wild Visions told by Katy Cawkwell & Lucy Lill

We plunge in with the birth of the goddess Artemis, leading onto a little-known fragment of her mythology, involving an ecstatic encounter with the Dawn and a moonlit path that leads to transformation. Next, we meet Kassandra, blessed with the power to see the future, cursed with never being believed. Join us as we go hunting in the wild places and raking through the ashes of a fallen city to bring you epic tales that set the women firmly centre stage.

Katy Cawkwell, the current Bard of Exeter, has been storytelling for 30 years, featuring in international festivals from India to Iceland and captivating audiences from London theatres to ancient burial chambers. She read Classics at Oxford and Greek mythology has been a central part of her repertoire ever since, including schools work funded by Classics for All and The Hellenic Society. She has curated this online series of events.

She has appeared as an actor in the West End and has just made a new show about the Sibyls. She is co-director of Story Jam and an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins.

Wednesday 9 December: Dionysos told by Amelia Ace Armande
