Professor Michael Wood: In the Footsteps of Alexander. Further reflections on an epic journey

Michael Wood revisited the story of Alexander the Great whose journey he retraced on TV over twenty years ago from Macedonia to India through Afghanistan and Central Asia. In this illustrated talk he reflected on some famous topographical cruxes among which is the first precise identification of the site of the Battle of Gaugamela.

The lecture was followed by a reception in the Hellenic and Roman Library.

Visit to the Sir John Soane Museum

Friends of Minerva and the Apollo Society enjoyed an exclusive access tour of Sir John Soane’s Museum. We were led around the Museum out-of-hours by one of their expert guides, with the opportunity to explore lesser-seen spaces such as the Private Apartments which houses Soane’s impressive cork model collection. After our tour, we enjoyed refreshments in the Yellow Drawing Rooms.

Greek & Roman antiquities handling workshop: Recording, illustrating, 3D modelling.

Joanna Ashe (Librarian) and Gabriel Bodard (Reader in Digital Classics, ICS) organised a workshop -  Greek & Roman antiquities handling workshop: Recording, illustrating, 3D modelling. Participants heard short lectures on collecting, studying and digitising antiquities, before having the opportunity to handle some of the objects in the Ehrenberg Bequest, learning how to illustrate and photograph them, and seeing one of the vases being 3D-printed.

Alicia (A.E.) Stallings: Love Poems from the Institute of Classical Studies

Alicia (A. E.) Stallings read and discussed work from her four published collections of poetry gathered into her new selected poems, This Afterlife, poems that explore Greek mythology, classical reception, ancient and modern Greece, and the diachronic strata of the city of Athens, as well as translations of modern Greek poems engaged in classical reception. Poems from the Institute of Classical Studies were also be included! The readings were followed by drinks in the Library where Alicia signed copies of This Afterlife: Selected Poems.
